Next, Please: School 2012

(The biggest cast this side of the movie 300)

School 2013
Family drama
? episodes
December 3, KBS2

I’m a sucker for coming of age stories set during high school, so this new drama is at the top of my must-watch list. Also intriguing is the potential for Degrassi-esque brand continuation: at least nominally, it’s a remake of a series that ran for four seasons beginning in 1999.

Based on its huge cast of young actors, I imagine its storytelling will be episodic, with each hour focusing on a different group of characters with problems centered around their classroom. I wasn’t crazy about this approach when it was used in Hello My Teacher, but that’s probably due to that drama’s tragic underuse of Korea’s greatest natural resource, Gong Yoo (an alum of the original School, might I add).

School’s adult cast of teachers includes an interesting pair: Jang Na Ra and Daniel Choi, aka the lead couple from 2011’s Baby-Faced Beauty. (Random fact: According to his Drama Wiki page, Daniel Choi has been in the advertising campaign for McDonald’s “triangular pie.” Yum. Triangular pie, just like Mom used to make.)

  1. I keep forgetting that drama is coming up! I don't know anything about it yet.. just that, yes, I sort of have a fondness for high-school dramas..

Man, what is this dearth of immediate NG-following dramas right now? All the ones that are out now I have no interest in, and all the ones I Do want to see aren't coming out until December, and even farther into next year.

    1. I have to say that I'm carefully avoiding your blog today, as I saw you posted a Nice Guy review. I still have four episodes left and need to watch them ASAP—the dramaweb is a dangerous, dangerous place when it comes to spoilers.

The drama I'm most excited for will be posted tomorrow =X I know even less about it than I know about School, but all signs point to it being so awesome that I may die of delight while watching the first episode. (But you can guess what it is.)

    2. Haha! I was trying to beat the crowd and get it out early! (Also, had insomnia..) You don't have to be too cautious. I left all the spoilery bits hidden under the 'Read more' part.

So.. I'm wracking my brain here. You've already listed 4.. what's left: City Conquest or Flower Boy Next Door? (I'm personally looking forward to the latter..)

    1. Well, maybe a little less good than Answer Me 1997. I don't think I can survive another show tugging at my heartstrings quite that hard ;)

It looks like the recent successful youth dramas are starting a trend, though. (Hooray!)

  3. This show sounds interesting, but what I am honestly more curious about is triangular pie at McDonald's. I am going to google it right now... Also, Holla! I love your blog.

    1. Here's an ad for triangular pie from Japan. (The Internet really is a wonderful place, isn't it? ) It's funny how different places have different names for things—nobody in Asia blinks at "glutinous rice," but to an American it sounds disgusting.

And Holla back ;) I was totally just spoiled for the nice guy finale on your blog. ::makes Kdrama clucking noise::

    2. Wait wait wait... so you saw my post before watching the episode? If so, then I am sorry because that is horrible!
Anyway, that pie looks exactly like a regular McDonald's pie except it's shaped like a triangle. If you think about it (which I am), a piece of pie should be shaped like a triangle. So, basically, I guess I can support triangular pies. Wow, I need to find something better to do right now than think so deeply about fast food pie. For example, finally finish the first episode of I Miss You. Peace.

  4. This might be a refreshing drama to watch after the mega tear jerkers I'm watching right now lol.

    1. Seriously. I was just thinking that I may have to put off starting I Miss You—either that or get a prescription for antidepressants. ::sigh::

    2. You should watch it. It is REALLY good even though it is sad. I just happened to be watching another ridiculously depressing drama at the same time. The last 4 episodes of A Love to Kill made me want to stab myself and jump off a bridge simultaneously. It was almost like the kdrama Ethan Frome. I was totally fine until those last few horrible episodes. What an ending... I've never wanted to punch to leads in the face more in my life than I did last night.
