Next, Please: Flower Boy Next Door

(The only thing cuter than this...
...is this)

Flower Boy Next Door
Romantic comedy
16 episodes
January 7, tvN

Have you been hearing a mysterious, high-pitched “EEE!!!” sound for the past week or so? Well, I must apologize: that’s the noise I’ve been making ever since I first heard about this new entry in the Oh Boy series of dramas, following after Flower Boy Ramyun Shop and my beloved Shut Up: Flower Boy Band.

Based on a webtoon about a girl loner who spends all of her time scoping out her dreamy next door neighbor, FBND is bound to be a high-energy, youthful delight. But the real kicker is the genius casting of its leads: Yoon Si Yoon (Me Too, Flower) and Park Shin Hye (Heartstrings). They’ve each been the best thing about every drama they’ve ever been in, and their doe-eyed cuteness seems utterly compatible. (Almost too much so, in fact. They could be siblings. Uh-oh...)

Although it’s pretty much standard procedure to shoot Kdramas live, allowing for on-the-fly course correction based on public opinion, the grapevine says FBND will begin filming soon. I find this heartening: scripting and filming a watchable show on a week-by-week basis seems spectacularly difficult. (Just ask the production team behind Faith.)

I’m hoping this show will find a middle ground between the lightweight FBRS and gritty SUFBB, but wherever it lands I’m almost certain to be a happy, happy girl.

I hate to wish away months and months of my life (especially when they contain long vacations), but will you just get here already, January?

  1. Mystery high-pitched noise? Found. Ooh, oh.. what's that? A twin high-pitched noise just a hair off tune? Mine!

You're right about their being the best part of each of their dramas. I'm almost positive Me Too, Flower was not a good drama.. but with him in it, I didn't notice :O

Btw. I'm getting off my computer in.. 3 minutes to relocate myself into a different room with a comfty couch, hot tea, a couple of cats (who threw up this morning, fyi) and I'm gonna watch SPRING WALTZ! Nobody better disturb me. I've been planning this for weeks!

    1. Do you hear that other noise? It's the sound of my car screeching to a halt in front of your house. (Well, I wish.) After all my fangirling for that show, I hope you don't hate it =X

And as far as FBND goes: I. CAN. NOT. WAIT.

    2. 7 eps yesterday of Spring Waltz! The best part.. introducing us to the adults in ep 1 Before doing the childhood flashbacks. Really grounded the whole show. And, left me seriously wondering for a few eps "wtf? seriously?? how.. what?.. parents..? piano..? what??" A nice twist.

So far the only thing bad I have to say about it is because of the 2 other females. But that's pretty typical, I suppose and hardly complaint-worthy anymore. Lol. As for Daniel Henney's bad acting? I find it charmingingly 'natural'. Also, it cracks me up to hear Koreans speaking in German - atrocious accents, but at least I can still understand them, so that's something. Haha! Hearing German, and reading English AND Korean subs though is kind of trippy..

    3. I definitely agree that starting with the grownups was a good choice—it makes the drama feel more like an integrated whole, with the little kid footage serving a real purpose in the greater story.

I love how English and other foreign languages are handled in Kdramas. It makes me wonder how American shows compare, but I'm not really a sophisticated enough linguist to tell. I have heard, though, that Sofia Varga from Modern Family will sometimes incorporate little jokes into the show's Spanish dialogue. That's kind of cute, but it must be distracting for people who actually speak the language.

::sigh:: I love the piano parts of Spring Waltz. (And actually discovered that there's a South Korean musician who's a little like the male lead.)

  2. This looks fun!! Though I must admit that I was not a fan of either Flower Boy Ramyun Shop or Shut up Flower Boy Band.... so I as much as I want to like it I have my doubts, but we'll see.

    1. I always like dramas that are geared toward younger audiences, so would be excited about this show even without the casting. But with the casting, I'm seriously the methodology required to build a time machine so I could zip to mid February and marathon it ;)

    1. I figured, based on the daily countdown on your tumblr (which I totally follow, btw). It's like...a kdrama advent calendar of joy ;)
